Auto Maintenance & Driving Tips to Increase MPGs
The gas we use in our vehicles is generally put to good use. It allows us to run errands, get to school or work and all around enjoy the ability to head off to fun attractions. Unfortunately, for many people, they should be able to get farther on a single tank of gas. There's a few things you can do to increase your car's fuel efficiency, both in regard to auto maintenance and the way you drive. Check out these awesome tips for increased MPGs!
Avoid Cartop Carriers
If you're headed out for a long trip consider a trunk mounted carrier or a small trailer. When you use a cartop carrier it reduces the aerodynamics of your vehicle, thus increasing air friction. By putting the luggage behind your car you will be able to maintain higher MPGs.
Don't Idle
People are often under the impression that it takes more gas to start a car than to let it run. While this may be true for big rigs and carbureted vehicles, it's not the case for modern vehicles. Long idles result in getting zero miles per gallon.
Drive the Speed Limit
Did you know that in most modern vehicles for every 5 MPH that you travel over 55 MPH you can lose 2 to 3 miles per gallon? It's best to follow posted speed limits, for one, because it is the law, and two, it will help you get better gas mileage!
Change the Air Filter
Your vehicle uses a mixt of gas and oxygen to create the explosive recipe that powers the motor. If the air filter is dirty the engine will end up burning excessive gasoline in order to compensate for the reduced air flow.
Installing New Spark Plugs
Another important auto maintenance service is the installation of new spark plugs. For many cars this needs to be completed approximately every 30,000 miles or so. If spark plugs become corroded or dirty they can misfire, which results in a huge waste of gasoline.
Removing Extra Weight
Before hitting the road make sure you only have exactly what you need in your vehicle. For every 100 pounds that's added to your vehicle you can lose 1 to 2% in fuel economy, or more! If you're going to the grocery store, don't bring your golf clubs.
Good driving and routine maintenance can do a lot for your fuel economy.
