Top Causes of a Dead Car Battery

Few things can be as frustrating as getting in your car and not having it start. One of the most common causes of no starts is a dead battery, which can happen for a variety of reasons. The battery which holds the necessary electrical power to get the car started and to run accessories when the engine is off, remains charged thanks to the alternator which creates electrical power through the movement of the motor. If you find that your battery has died there is a good chance that you can jump start your car, but from time to time you will need to replace it. Here are the top causes of dead car batteries.

Age of battery

Automotive batteries will last a long time, but like most things in life, they don't last forever. Depending on the type of battery you have you can expect it to generally last for two to five years. At the end of its lifespan it will no longer be able to hold a charge and it will require replacement.

Stuck Relay

Electrical pathways use relay switches to turn whatever item on or off. The relay either connects or stops the flow of electricity. If the relay becomes stuck in the on position it will continue to "draw" electricity, even when the car is off. This can drain the battery, but also damage the part in which the relay is connected to.

Electric Draw

If there is an electric draw, technically known as a parasitic battery draw, it means that there is a part that is sucking up electrical juice, even if it doesn't appear to be on. This can happen if there is a broken switch, a loose wire and other issues.

Failed Alternator

The alternator is what creates the electricity that is used by the car while its engine is running. Excess power is stored in the battery to get the car started and to run accessories when the engine is off. If the alternator fails the electrical power from the battery will quickly be drained and the car won't be able to start.

Leaving lights/accessories on

The most common cause of a dead battery is driver or passenger error. Leaving headlights on or even a door ajar which often keeps interior lights on can drain the battery, leaving you stranded. Always be sure doors are snug and lights are off when you park your car. It only takes a couple hours or less to kill the battery.
