Don't Put Off Brake Repair!
The more aware you are of your vehicle's needs, the more reliable and safe it will remain to drive. This means you should always pay attention to any signs of trouble with your car's engine, transmission, suspension and other components so you can have them fixed in a timely and professional manner. This is especially true when it comes to the brakes, as they are your vehicle's most important safety feature. If you notice any of the following signs of brake trouble, head to the auto shop as soon as possible.
Grinding Noises
More than likely one of the first things that you will notice if your brakes are on their way out is a grinding noise that occurs when you try to stop. This noise, which can resemble grinding, squealing or howling, is generally the result of completely worn down brake pads. If the pads are gone it means that metal is grinding on metal, resulting in nearly no stopping power.
Spongy Brake Pedal
If you have to press the brake pedal all, or almost all the way to the floor before getting a response from the brakes then you probably need new brake pads, as your vehicle's are greatly worn out. However this could also be caused by air in the brake lines or a more serious issue, such as a brake fluid leak.
Vibrations when Stopping
Strange vibrations can mean a lot of things in a car, but if it occurs while you brake, it is likely due to warped rotors. The rotors are what brake pads grab in order to create the friction to slow the vehicle, so if they are warped the pads don't have a smooth surface to rub against and braking power is greatly reduced.
Pulling while Braking
When you hit the brake pedal your vehicle should easily continue in a straight line. If your car tries to turn left or right it is more than likely caused by uneven wear of the brake pads. Other issues that cause this could be impurities in the brake fluid or a stuck brake cylinder.
ABS Light Illuminated
If the ABS light on your dashboard turns on then it is time for brake repair. This light stands for anti-lock braking system, and if it is on it means that sensors in the brake system have detected some form of an issue.
