Does my Car Need Suspension Repairs?
The suspension system is an integral part of your vehicle that does more than just provide you with a comfortable ride. While it does control the bouncing of the car that keeps your ride relatively smooth it also is tasked with a few other important jobs. It is designed to keep all four wheels on the ground at any given time and it ensures that your car does not roll over during cornering. If you experience any of these signs of suspension failure be sure to contact your mechanic right away.
One corner of the car is low
A common sign of suspension failure in a particular corner of the car, such as a collapsed shock, is if one corner of your vehicle seems low, but the tire appears to be properly inflated. This can cause your car to drift, which is not only dangerous but it also increases tire wear as well.
Oil on the struts
The struts of your vehicle rely on a special fluid that helps to absorb the bumps and cracks of the road. If they shell of strut cracks or if the seals wear out the oil will begin to leak from the strut, resulting in a very rigid ride.
Rolling sensation during cornering
The anti-sway bar is tasked with keeping your vehicle upright during cornering. It does this by shifting the vehicle's center of gravity when traveling around a bend. If the anti-sway bar, which is a part of the suspension system, were to fail it could result in a catastrophic accident. For this reason it is very important to get to a repair shop if you ever feel like your cornering abilities have been reduced.
A great way to test your suspension is by pushing on the hood or trunk of the vehicle to get the car bouncing. Once you quit pushing on the vehicle it should return to its normal height and stop moving within 3-4 bounces. If it continues to move up and down beyond that then you will likely need to replace some components of the suspension system.
