Three Common Fuel Delivery Issues
Gasoline is what makes cars go. So when the parts that get the gasoline to the engine, specifically the combustion chamber, don't work as they're designed, then it is understandable that the vehicle won't be able to run. The fuel delivery process is fairly simple. A pump, the fuel pump specifically, propels gasoline from the gas tank, through a filter that removes any unwanted contaminants and into the fuel injection unit. From the fuel injectors gasoline is sprayed into the combustion chamber where it mixes with air to create the proper mixture that makes engines run so well. If any of the three main components of the fuel delivery system fail, the engine will not run.
Malfunctioning Fuel Pump
Most newer cars and trucks are equipped with an electric fuel pump that is generally located inside the gas tank. In older vehicles it was a mechanical device that was often placed somewhere along the underside of the car. If the pump is unable to move gasoline from the tank to the engine your car will stutter and stall. If you try to start your car with a broken gas pump the engine will likely turn over and over without firing.
Clogged Fuel Filter
The fuel filter has an important job. It removes contaminants that are commonly found in gasoline that is pumped from the gas station. While most of this debris is removed at the refinery, the fuel filter is a last line of defense.A clogged fuel filter can result in a car that stutters, idles improperly or causes the car to stall completely, since gasoline can't move through it.
Dirty Fuel Injectors
The fuel injectors are the last stop before the gas is sprayed into the combustion chamber. They can become clogged with carbon and other gunk that is a result from the harsh operating conditions they reside in. The use of fuel injection cleaners can help prevent this problem. Dirty fuel injectors can cause an engine that misfires or runs very sluggishly.
If your car seems to have a rough idle or cranks over and over without starting, it is likely a fuel delivery issue.
