Top Auto Electric Problems

Top Auto Electric ProblemsYour car uses electricity to complete a variety of tasks, and we aren't just referring to hybrids. Gas powered cars rely on electricity for everything from moving the power seats and playing the radio to starting the engine. If your car has electrical troubles it can be fairly difficult to diagnose if you're not a trained technician. However, many electrical problems boil down to one of the following issues, which for the most part are not too difficult to repair.

Dead Battery

The battery stores the electricity needed to get the car up and running. It is also what provides power to lights, the radio and other accessories when the engine is off. However, should you use the lights or radio for too long the battery can die. In cases like these a jump start will be necessary to get it the vehicle up and running again, which, assuming the alternator is healthy, will recharge the battery too. It is important to know that car batteries do need to be replaced every 3-5 years on average, depending on what sort of battery your vehicle has.

Failed Relay Switch

Many electrical circuits utilize relay switches that help turn on or off devices within that circuit. For example, when you step on the gas the fuel pump relay clicks to the on position, when you let off the gas it switches to off. If a relay switch was to get stuck in one position or the other it could cause a number of issues. Continuing with our previous example, if the switch becomes stuck in the on position it could result in gas being unable to flow to the engine. In the on position it will cause unwarranted acceleration, and, should you turn the car off, the pump will stay on anyway, thus draining the battery.

Blown Fuse

Fuses are designed to prevent excessive amounts of electricity from flowing into a circuit, so as to prevent damage to the parts within it. If excessive electricity flows through a circuit not designed to handle that much, it will break the circuit, in turn saving the part. Blown fuses are easy to fix and very inexpensive.

Malfunctioning Alternator

The alternator is what creates electricity as you drive. It does this by using the motion of engine to generate electrical power. If the alternator begins to fail you'll experience trouble operating accessories, notice dim headlights and eventually the car may die and the battery will be drained.
