What are common problems that cause no-start?

What are common problems that cause no-start?It's best to bring your car to the shop when you first notice that your vehicle is struggling to fire up. If you ignore the symptom, then it could soon worsen and prevent your engine from starting whatsoever, leaving you stranded. At Precision Tune Auto Care, our local mechanics have extensive experience with identifying and fixing problems that cause no-start.

Common Reasons that Cars Won't Start

Problems with the battery/charging system are often to blame for no-start. While it's widely understood that batteries die because of left-on headlights, there are several other issues that can lead to dead batteries, such as parasitic draws, corroded/loose connections, and old age. A failing alternator can also cause a battery to die. Signs of alternator trouble include dimming/flickering headlights, malfunctioning electrical accessories (such as power seats and the radio), and a dashboard warning light that reads GEN or ALT or flashes on in the shape of a battery.

A failing starter is another common cause of no-start. One sign of starter trouble is that you turn the key and then get only a clicking noise. A bad starter can also result in a grinding noise.

Problems related to fuel supply are also often to blame for no-start. A clogged fuel filter can prevent your engine from getting enough fuel to fire up. By replacing your fuel filter every 20,000 to 30,000 miles, you can prevent this from becoming an issue. Also, if your fuel pump isn't working correctly, then fuel may not be successfully directed from the tank to the engine. Symptoms of fuel pump trouble include: sputtering, loss of power under load, worsening fuel-efficiency, and a whining noise emerging from the tank. Dirty fuel injectors can also cause problems with getting your engine to fire up. You can try using a fuel additive to eliminate contaminants from injectors and intake valves.
