What is causing my check engine light to turn on?

An illuminated check engine light doesn't always mean that engine failure is imminent. But it's still smart to promptly visit the shop so that computerized diagnostics can be conducted. By being proactive about identifying your check engine light trigger, it's much more likely that you'll be able to address the problem before it escalates and becomes much more expensive to fix. At Precision Tune, our local mechanics can accurately diagnose your engine issue and then expertly repair it.

Common Reasons the Check Engine Light Illuminates

Oftentimes, when the check engine light comes on, it's because of a faulty catalytic converter. Symptoms of catalytic converter trouble include worsening gas mileage, poor acceleration, and a smell like rotten eggs. For your car to be minimally polluting, it's crucial that your catalytic converter is working properly. If there's an issue with an oxygen sensor, the check engine light may illuminate, and trouble may develop with the catalytic converter. The mass airflow sensor is another sensor that could lead to your check engine light turning on. Problems with the mass airflow sensor can cause worsening acceleration, and may also cause your engine to stall shortly after you start it.

Faulty spark plugs are another reason the check engine light could turn on. Cars made after the year 2000 can commonly make it 100,000 miles before their spark plugs need to be replaced. Older vehicles tend to need new spark plugs with greater regularity. Ignition coil trouble could also trigger the check engine light. Symptoms of an ignition coil problem include decreasing gas mileage and problems with getting your engine to start. The check engine light could also come on due to a bad battery that is causing low voltage at the computer. And though it might seem strange, a loose or missing gas cap is another potential check engine light trigger.
